The loom is great for weaving cloth and tapestries. In 1804, Jacquard built the loom by taking the essence of something, translating the information, and programming it into something else. When it was created, a punched card held the essence of the design that the loom would receive (pictured on the left below).

Today, I will show you the blueprint I made on Google to weave my initials (pictured on the right below). To understand and follow the blueprint, please keep in mind that for each row, the transparent boxes represent the dark red strip sliding under the transparent strips, and the dark red boxes represent the dark red strip sliding over the transparent strips.

In simpler terms, the transparent boxes represent the thread going down, and the dark red boxes represent the thread going up.

Steps I Used to Weave the Initial "A"

  • Row 1: Down 4, Up 6, Down 4.
  • Row 2: Down 4, Up 1, Down 4, Up 1, Down 4.
  • Row 3: Down 3, Up 2, Down 4, Up 2, Down 3.
  • Row 4: Down 3, Up 1, Down 6, up 1, Down 3.
  • Row 5: Down 3, Up 8, Down 3.
  • Row 6: Down 3, Up 1, Down 6, Up 1, Down 3.
  • Row 7: Down 3, Up 1, Down 6, Up 1, Down 3.
